Fall Energy (& Money) Savings Hacks
It’s that time again… cool breeze, falling leaves, and pumpkin spice lattes all around. And of course, Halloween! These home energy hacks can help you keep your electricity bills from getting too high this fall.
1. Morning Sunshine Warmth
To heat your home, you can take advantage of the sun during the day. The furnace should be turned down during the day. Open your curtains and let the sun heat up your rooms during the mornings and afternoons. Particularly for south-facing windows. Close the curtains when the sun sets to keep the warm air inside.
2. Find Drafts, Seal Leaks, and Be Comfy
During the fall months, get into the habit of looking for air leaks in your home. This can be done by looking for air leaks near windows and doors during colder days. These drafts can be found at the edges of the window where it slides, hinges, or meets another unit. Next, inspect the weather stripping, door moldings, and tracks for cracks or gaps. Caulk and replace any worn weather stripping.
3. Replace Dirty Filters
Eliminate dirty air filters. It can make a big difference in your home’s energy savings. Not only will it improve the quality of your air, but also the efficiency and effectiveness of your cooling and heating systems. Dirty filters can make your HVAC system work harder and spend more time on the switch than it would with clean filters.
4. Do Not Touch That Thermostat
You may be tempted to turn up the thermostat to heat the house as the cold weather draws near. Instead of turning on the heater, grab a cup of coffee, and a sweater, and snuggle under the warmth of the sun streaming through your windows. To reduce your electricity bills this fall, keep your thermostat at a minimum.
5. Switch to Led Bulbs
You should switch to LED bulbs if you haven’t used them yet. Traditional incandescent bulbs are too hot and use too much electricity. LED bulbs are more efficient than traditional bulbs and use 85% of their energy. They also last 10-25 times longer.
